Thomas was done for. He was ruined for any other woman.

He faced the revelation like he did most things in life: with a shrug of the shoulders and good humor. As far as he was concerned, his destiny was already determined. There was no point fighting against it.

He lifted her in his arms with what little strength he had left and tucked her under the covers. He settled in beside her and pulled her close.

“I think we need to try something again,” he said.

“If we try anything else, I don’t think I’ll survive.”

“No,” he said, laughing. “Get your mind out of the gutter. I think we need to try the introduction portion of the day again, Matilda. What do you say?”

She stiffened in his arms, but he pressed on. “I want to be able to call out your name when I finally get inside of you. Let me in. Please.”

She was silent for a long time, and he was afraid she’d dropped off to sleep.
